After Voice of San Diego published stories about the Poway Unified School District’s costly financing methods with school bonds, we were interested in how other school districts in San Diego County planned to use their proposed bonds floated in the Nov. 6, 2012, election. I spoke with school board members and taxpayer advocates while compiling piles of data and documents about the election and capital appreciation bonds.

This story I pitched, researched and reported after hearing a story about new accessibility standards for pools on National Public Radio. I localized the story to Central Oregon and explored whether the city of Bend was prepared for these changes.

Bend is in close proximity to a Native American reservation. The Central Oregon Community College District has made great efforts to reflect the diversity of the community in its enrollment. I was able to capture a wide range of voices for this piece.

This article is the culmination of a school-year long series I wrote about a football player who was nearly killed after being injured during the first play of the season-opening game at Contra Costa College. The coverage– which required hospital visits and building rapport with family and friends–  taught me persistence and sensitivity.

I explored the history of HIV and AIDS in San Diego County for a Digital Journalism course in spring 2012. I created the website using Adobe Dreamweaver and compiled data from the Centers for Disease Control to make infographics with Google Charts. To get the story, I attended prayer circles for HIV/AIDS patients and survivors, visited health clinics and met with county officials.

Deadline nears for new mandates impacting Americans with disabilities

Along with my classmates in our journalism capstone class, we explored avenues of hope for people living with disabilities. I researched this story about the mandate changes to the Americans with Disabilities Act, which includes a print piece, a photo slideshow and video.
